How to win on Medicare for All
We’ll Keep Innovating
Medicare for All opponents regularly claim that our for-profit health care system is the reason that the United States leads the world in innovative treatments and medical devices.
It’s true that the US is at the center of a lot of medical innovation, but our for-profit system isn’t the reason.
- Through the NIH and public universities, taxpayers already fund a huge portion of the research responsible for many modern medical advances.
- Even though the taxpayer funds the groundwork, Americans pay twice as much for prescription drugs as patients in other wealthy countries.
- On top of that, pharmaceutical companies and other medical innovators would still operate privately. There’s no reason to believe that innovation would slow under Medicare for All.
